At the moment we are learning about ‘People Who Help Us’ and over the last week we have been focusing on people who help us in school. One example of how I have incorporated ICT into this is by using the video camera with the children to interview staff. We decided on two basic questions to ask, ‘what is your name?’ and ‘can you tell us about your job?’ Next, rather than simply watching it back I have embedded the movie clips into a flipchart along with photographs the children took (using ACTIVprimary software.) I have still to let the children record their voices into the flipchart explaining what we did.
The children will be able to look back at their interactive story and learn about people who help us in school whenever they choose. This was a simple activity which the children enjoyed. It was a great way of using ICT purposefully to enhance learning rather than simply using ICT for the sake of using it.

Hi Catherine,
I was interested to read about this engaging way to explore the roles of people who help children in schools - it sounds like a really meaningful exercise. I work for Enquire, the Scottish advice service for additional support for learning. We’re aware that it’s hard for young people to ask for help when they need it - it can be embarrassing and they are often not sure who to approach or how to start the conversation. I’m sure your project will have really helped the children involved.
We have a guide for young people called ‘People who can help you in and out of school’ and I wondered if the group would be interested in looking at it as part of their project. It’s broadly aimed at older primary and secondary pupils (I’m not sure how old your group is). They can download it from http://www.enquire.org.uk/youngpeople/downloads.html or, if you would like to order copies of the booklets or audio CD, please get in touch.
All the best,
Katy
